What do Charlize Theron, the World Cup and the summer blockbuster hit “District 9” have in common?  They all call South Africa home.  This rich and vibrant country boasts of its culture, diversity and adventure.  Johannesburg, or Joburg (as they call it), is the heartbeat of South Africa.  Similar to New York City, Johannesburg is a city where everyone is on the move.  By day, Johannesburg is a thriving metropolis where business means business.  At night, Johannesburg turns into the hotspot capital of South Africa.  With so much to offer, it is no wonder why Johannesburg is our featured destination.

At over 120 years old, Johannesburg was founded on the discovery of gold on an unassuming farm land in an area known as The Witwatersrand.  What would transpire over the next 120 years would turn this city from the worst to the best city in the world.

Johannesburg is very rich in diverse cultures, which can be seen throughout the city and its museums.  Check out the Apartheid Museum, one of the cities most popular tourist attractions.  This museum drives the story of Apartheid directly into the hearts of each visitor.  Captivating images of the events of the city provide a great story of where Johannesburg has been and where it is going.

Ladies, have the urge to shop (what a silly question)?  Well then Sandton City Shopping Center must be on your list of places to visit.  Boasting over 300 stores with all of your favorite name brands and then some, you can pick up the latest in fashion from Louis Vouitton, Gucci, Prada.  Be sure to also keep an eye on regional name brands that offer the big boys a run for their money.  This shopping center also has two grocery stores, a movie theater, numerous banks and hotels.

If you’re looking for some adventure, you must check out Kruger National Park.  This park has many different regions that display a wide variety of African terrain and wildlife.  From the plains to the hills and mountains, Kruger National Park native inhabitants include impala, buffalo, crocodile, giraffe, kudu, wildebeest, zebra and much more.  Be sure to keep your camera handy, because opportunities to snap pictures come and go as quickly as the cheetahs.

As the sun sets in the distance, you know its time to get ready for a night out on the town.  Johannesburg has a great variety of shows, bars, clubs and pubs.  The Radium Beerhall is the oldest surviving bar and grill in Johannesburg, with a genuinely historic ambience that’s just as enticing as the good food on the menu; as authentic as the foot-tapping live jazz that makes the embossed tin ceiling vibrate in sympathy. The walls are covered in memorabilia, from photos of pre-war soccer teams and jazzmen who have played there, to vintage posters and press clippings that record the Radium’s history.

If you’re looking for the finer side of Joburg, check out Katzy’s at the Grillhouse.  Katzy’s is South Africa’s finest Jazz Club.  Nestled in the Firs shopping centre in sophisticated Rosebank it is the best place in town to hear live jazz, drink fine whiskey and smoke the tastiest cigars. With resident bands performing five nights a week, un unbeatable wine list, a range of cocktails and more than 100 different whiskeys, cognacs and bourbons to choose from, Katzy’s offers a nightlife experience that defines class and entertainment.

Lastly, if you’re a fan of football (soccer to us Americans) then you cannot pass an opportunity to catch a game of the World Cup.  A heartland of South African football, Johannesburg is the backbone of the professional game. The majority of professional clubs come from the city and its surrounds. The professional football outfits from the city are: Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Jomo Cosmos, BidVest Wits and one of the oldest clubs in the country, Moroka Swallows.  For ticketing information, check out the World Cup website through FIFA.

We’re sure you’ll fall in love with Johannesburg.  When you do, you should consider a timeshare in Joburg.  It’s clear Johannesburg will bring you a new experience year after year and leave memories that will last a lifetime.
